‘Vishnuvardhana’ kannada film title rejected

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) on Friday rejected kannada actor Dwarkish’s petition to use ‘Vishnuvardhana’ as the title for his film, starring Sudeep.

The topic became controversial when late actor Vishnuvardhan’s wife Bharathi took exception to the decision. KFCC, in its ruling, said: “Rules stipulate that no title which bears even a remote similarity to another name can be used.” Actor Abhijeet is producing the film ‘Vishnu’, which will be completed by November.

Dwarakish said: “Sudeep has to decide on the next course of action. Rules are applicable to all, the ball is in Sudeep’s court.’’

Dwarakish new kannada film Vishnuvardhana in trouble

Kannada actor Sudeep will soon be seen in Vishnuvardhana, a kannada film launched by veteran actor and film producer Dwarakish is in controversy now.

The kannada film 'Vishnuvardhana' is sure to excite millions of fans of legendary Kannada actor Dr Vishnuvardhan who died just six months ago.

Priyamani and Bhavana have been selected as the two heroines of the film. Sonu Sood will be playing an important role in the film which will be directed by debutant V Kumar, who has worked with well-known Tamil film director K S Ravikumar in films like Dashavathaaram and Villain.

"We finalised the title of this big budget film after lot of brainstorming sessions with the team of technicians and also some well wishers. I don't know how the news about the title has spread. We finalised the title on Monday evening, but my mobile has been flooded with calls from more than two hundred Vishnu fans," said Dwarakish.

He said the title perfectly suits the action-oriented entertainer because Vishnuvardhan was called as Sahasa Simha (Lion of Action) by his fans.

Vishnuvardhan's original name was Sampath Kumar, which was changed to Vishnuvardhana by legendary kannada film director Puttanna Kanagal when he launched the actor in the 1972 blockbuster Nagarahaavu.

Vishnu had acted in a small role in the award winning film Vamsha Vruksha directed by Girish Kasaravalli and B V Karanth jointly and the titles of the film displayed his name as Sampath Kumar.

But now kannada Producer-actor Dwarakeesh's plans to make this film on the legendary actor Vishnuvardhana with the same title has run into rough weather into the late actor's wife kannada veteran actress Bharathi Vishnuvardhan taking objection to it.

Besides, the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) has not approved the film title.

KFCC President Basanth Kumar Patil said: "How can Dwarakeesh announce a movie without getting the title approved by the KFCC Title Committee. I have sent a notice to Dwarakeesh not to launch the movie without seeking our approval."

As per KFCC rules, a movie project can be announced only after the Title Committee clears the title. "There is another rule that clearly states that film titles in the name of actors and actresses cannot be granted," Patil added.

Bharathi Vishnuvardhana contended that Dwarakeesh planned to encash on Vishnuvardhana's name for commercial motives. She has asked Dwarakeesh to alter the name to Raja Vishnuvardhana.

When contacted, Dwarakeesh said: "Unnecessary controversy is being created. The film title is Vishnuvardhana whereas the actor's name is Sampth Kumar Vishnuvardhana. Come what may, I will make a film on the title Vishnuvardhana. Dare anybody stop me?"

Dwarakeesh and Vishnuvardhana were close friends who did many films together some of them which were blockbusters. Their friendship, however, was not stable. The two fell apart after they joined hands for Aaptha Mithra.

Bharathi Vishnuvardhana, multilingual actor and wife of legendary actor Dr. Vishnuvardhan is apparently hurt over the use of her husband's name as the title of the film.

She expressed her unhappiness over this development and said that she will go against anybody using her husband's name for cheap gains. "When I saw the press reports that Dwarakish is using my husband's name as the title of the film, I was really hurt. Everybody knows Dwarakish's attitude and his remarks against my husband at every available opportunity. He did not succeed in his endeavour. That is mainly because my husband was a legend and has helped thousands of people in his time. But the same person who denounced my husband all the time now wants to use his name for the title of his film for some cheap publicity and monetary gains' says an agitated Dr. Bharathi Vishnuvardhan. She is now involved in completing all the unfinished developmental works initiated by her husband.

The Karnataka state government is seeking her advise for the Rs. 10 crore Dr.Vishnuvardhan Memorial Project. Ms. Keerthi Vishnuvardhan daughter of vishnuvardhan also said that she is against the use of her father's name for any commercial purposes.

Bharathi Vishnuvardhan is also unhappy about the news reports that suggested that Dwarakish has included many real life incidents relating to the personal life of Dr. Vishnuvardhan. "How can some one say that he had known Dr. Vishnu's personal life. My husband was a private person and did not mix up his profession with his personal life. That is precisely the reason why millions of fans liked him' said Dr. Bharathi. She hoped that Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce will not clear the title for the film, as there is a policy in the chamber not to allow the use of the name of celebrities in the title of the film.

The use of Dr. Vishnuvardhan's name for the title has also been opposed by a large section of Dr. Vishnu's fans, though Dwarakish claims the opposite.

APTHARAKSHAKA - Movie Review

DIRECTOR: P Vasu

ACTORS: Vishnuvardhan, Avinash, Sandhya, Vimala Raman, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Komal

Aptharakshaka is a worthy final kannada film for Vishnuvardhan. It is well-thought out and executed for a commercial film with enough entertainment values any movie buff to enjoy. It is hard to watch the film without realising that Vishnuvardhan is no more. But on its merit alone this film stands head and shoulders above most films made in the recent years in Sandlewood.

Those who have seen Apthamitra will realise that the sequel (and part prequel) is also similar in setting. The story is a playoff between a psychiatrist and a godman who try to unravel the mystery of a long dead dancer’s effects on living souls.

Late kannada hero Vishnuvardhan and Avinash re-enact their respective roles. This time there is more than one woman affected by either Nagavalli’s ghost or psyched after reading about her life. The psychiatrist and the godman respect each other’s methods of solving the problem for a common good.

Aptharakshaka also brings to life the story of Nagavalli and king Vijayaraja Bahadur which was mentioned in the first film. This is the high-point of the film. But director Vasu has other aces up his sleeve which he unravels as the film progresses. The real fun would be in watching it.

Vishnuvardhan in a dual role and a very unlikely getup steals the show. The negative shades in the king’s role does not affect his charm any bit. He modulates his voice twice over and the result is exciting. Komal as his sidekick is hilarious. Vimala Raman as Nagavalli is apt. Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Sandhya and Bhavana are the suspense elements who help the film gain momentum towards an unexpected climax. But it is only Bhavana who gets to don the best designer blouses.

P Vasu deserves all the praise for deft handling of the interesting plot he has conceived. There is hardly a scene that is out of place. Gurukiran’s music and PKH Doss’ camera work complement the film that is a must watch.

Vishnuvardhan acts as Yajamaana

This is the greatness of our kannada super star sahasa simha vishnuvardhan. He exactly acted as yajamaana to protect his family and the victim!!

Archana, the sister-in-law (wife of late kannada director R Seshadri) of Vishnuvardhan stays with the star’s family in Jayanagar and works as a manager in a private firm. She started receiving obscene SMSes on her cell phone from a youth a couple of days ago. Archana confided to Vishnuvardhan’s daughter Keerthi. The latter told this to Raju, a staff member of the actor, who in turn complained to the police.

The youth was subsequently identified and picked up by Thilak Nagar police. After he was suitably ‘taken to task’ it was revealed that he was a relative of a top city cop. No formal complaint was lodged and family members of the youth apologised to Archana and Vishnuvardhan. The incident was kept secret from the actor and more importantly from his Vishnu Sene fans so that it would not be a repeat of a incident where two men were beaten up badly.

The issue was prevented from taking an ugly turn. A few years ago, a similar incident had resulted in two youth from Ramanagara being beaten up by Vishnuvardhan’s fans and dumped near Bannerghatta. Vishnuvardhan has now requested the cops not to reveal the identity of the youth.

“Thankfully Raju did not tell this to members of Vishnu Sene. The fans tend to be very protective about my family members. When Keerthi and Archana used to go to college by bus, fans used to escort the bus in auto rickshaws. I remember how two youngsters were beaten black and blue when they teased my daughters years ago. I do not want such things to be repeated. This incident only came to my notice when the family members of that boy wanted to apologise,” kannada cinema star Vishnuvardhan said.

KANNADA ACTOR VISHNU’S DOUBLE CENTURY

The veteran kannada actor becomes the third lead actor in Kannada to do 200 films.

After Rajkumar and Ambarish, Vishnuvardhan has become the third lead actor in Kannada to reach the 200th film mark. The landmark film will be a sequel to Apthamitra, and is titled Aptharakshaka. Rajkumar’s 200th film was Devatha Manushya, while Ambarish’s was Gowdru. P Vasu who directed Apthamitra, will be directing Aptharakshaka too. Though many character artistes have acted in more number of films, only these three have managed 200 films as lead actors.

The shooting for the film will start on March 10 in Palani (Tamil Nadu). Palani was chosen because the script demanded the background of an old mansion which Vasu found there.

Kannada actor Dr Vishnu’s 200th film - Aapthamitra- 2?

The 200th film of Kannada actor Dr.Rajakumar was Devatha Manushya, the 200th film of Ambarish was Gowdru and now the 200th film of Dr.Vishnuvardhana is going to be Aptha Mithra-II (Aptharakshaka).

Krishnakumar is given the complete free hand to make this film by part I producer of 'Aptha Mithra' and veteran kannada comedian Dwarakish. The film is going on the floor in the direction of P Vasu but Dwarakish will not be a part of this film even in the acting department too.

On last Monday when Dwarakish had come to Atri Hotel for the Dubai Babu meet, he said: “ Aptha Mithra is the film that has given new lease of life for me. I am the one who lost Rs.35 crores in film making and direction. Unfortunately after a successful film I take up a film next it has failed and that is the reason I am very apprehensive about my next film” said Dwarakish. Right now Dwarakish is working in seven Kannada films.
