Kannada film KANASEMBO KUDUREYANNERI review

At a time when fake Kasaravallis flood Kannada’s parallel cinema, the master returns to the arena, re-affirming our faith in art films. Having said that, Kanasembo Kudureyanneri is not the best of Kasaravalli’s works. As always, the film is simple in its content, but does not necessarily ignite you. (Like most of his works did).

Irya is a gravedigger and lives in pitiable condition with his wife Rudri. His belief in his profession prevents him from taking any other labour. But it is not every day that someone dies in the village. His wife takes up the responsibility of earning the daily morsel. Irya dreams of Siddha, his community God, promising him ‘work’ the following day. He believes the village landlord has passed away. But his belief is shattered when he is told there has been no death. His wife’s dream of Siddha's arrival also proves to be false. But the reality turns out to be something different. Irya's dreams are crushed from becoming realities by the manner in which the well-off people in the village use it to re-establish and save their own belief systems.

The non-linear narrative, a first in Kasaravalli films, was not completely essential. Only in two scenes does it have some impact. The technique is not used to reveal different perspectives of the same situation by different people, but only to show some additional information, not visible to the other. The climax seems like an afterthought that does not exactly connect with the original storyline.

Brilliant in Irya’s role, kannada acotr Biradara proves his talent after being marginalised in commercial cinema as a comedian. As convincing is Umashree as Rudri. Veteran actor Sadashiv Brahamavar should pick up an award or two for his role in the film.

Kasaravalli's attention to detail, in all departments, is the reason for the good show by every actor and technician in the film. V Manohar's music is rustic and charming and ‘more’ than what you find in regular art films. HM Ramachandra's cinematography is another major highlight. Kanasembo Kudureyanneri is a good film for serious film aficionados; but it does not ignite you. Not quite a master’s work, shall we add. Yet, it has glimpses of his brilliance.

GAANA BAJANA - New Kannada film review

There is a superstition in the kannada film industry -if someone’s lucky for you, use them till they turn unlukcy! Looks like Prashanth, director of kannada film Gaana Bajana (Free download Gana bajana songs here), is following that dictum. He’s repeated the three main actors from his debut kannada film Love Guru. Not only that, even the characters in Gaana Bajana seems similar to Love Guru. Deja vu! However, the film scores in style. With youngsters as his target audience, Prashanth keeps the film fast-paced enough to keep them glued.

It's a simple love story. Two youngsters, Krish (Tharun) and Radhe (Radhika Pandit) fall in love and the relationship develops at the usual city hangouts. There is Dilip Raj playing a dandy who gives the film a fillip every time he is on screen. Radhe initially rejects Krish because she loves the other guy. The premise is mundane. But the stylish presentation somehow makes you want to tolerate the film, which lacks in substance. Gaana Bajana is entertaining for the sake of being entertaining.

Joshua Sridhar's music, which remains 'inspired', is the highlight of the film. Shekar's camerawork allows Prashanth what he wanted, an avant-garde Kannada production. Take a break from the serious stuff and enjoy this kannada film.

PANCHARANGI - Kannada movie review

A let down by Yograj Bhat. Pancharangi loses track from the word go. Heavy on dialogues (funny at times but evoking only a wry smile mostly), the film is the director’s philosophy on love, marriage and life distilled from his previous films. The story, scenes and plot are very diluted and could have easily fit into an hourlong tele-drama.

Falling in love during a big fat wedding is passe. Even Mungaru Male had that theme. So Yograj Bhat dilutes the backdrop to a meet with a prospective bride. Since it is not a wedding, the ancient and imposing house is not decorated; there are only a limited number of characters and the few locations seem overused. These make the film look stingy despite the excellent visualisation.

Bharat Kumar (Diganth) cares about nothing but abusing the ‘normal and boring’ life of other people and falls asleep anytime, anywhere. He funds his post- graduate course on Kannada by dressing up mannequins with sarees. His ‘normal’ brother has grown up to be a NRI techie on the insistence of their parents. The family goes to see a bride-to-be for the brother. Bharat and the girl’s cousin (Nidhi as Ambika) fall in love. Since there is not much of a story to comment on, it is nice to note that the dialogues are not predictable.

A character’s failure to reveal its true identity due to strict parenting, a fraud in the guise of a holy man, a blind man’s world view, a deserter’s quest for lost family are some of the better ideas in the film which still doesn’t manage to stamp an impression.

Since the love story has to happen in just a day and half, everything about the characters has to be revealed by way of dialogues alone. Diganth’s character who ends every sentence with the rhyming ‘galu’ begins to bore after a point. Perhaps the director knew the drawback of relying heavily on dialogues so the characters speak three different dialects of Kannada. The songs are good. But better heard than seen. Mostly good looking characters, but that is not everything about a film.

HOO - Kannada movie review

DIRECTOR: V Ravichandran

People grow old, but love stories do not. So kannada star Ravichandran tries to pass off as a jobless youngster who is the epitome of friendship and love. No need to blame him. Even in the original Telugu Vasantham, the role was played by a not-so-young Venkatesh. But the spontaneity is missing in Hoo.

Ravichandran and Meera Jasmine are childhood friends. Jasmine plays the violin in almost every scene (she is a music teacher) and Ravichandran plays chess thrice in the entire film — he is supposed to be a chess player! Like Vishnuvardhan in kannada movie Karna, Ravichandran is the black sheep of the family for he chooses sports over a job. Soon Jasmine lands in Ravichandran’s home after her father’s death. She convinces the family about Ravichandran’s choices in life.

By this time our chess player has fallen in love with Namitha who covers the screen with her ample assets. Vishnuvardhan had to sacrifice his kidney and give up soccer in Karna. In Hoo, Ravichandran just has to give up playing chess to help Jasmine, which he does without much thought. The film, however, is no tragedy. Ravichandran is the master of visual appeal. In his usual style, there are flowers, balloons and oomph in every scene. But the tragedy is Ravichandran and Namitha together seem like two romancing elephants. Harikrishna’s music, including the background score, sounds like a rehash of Ravichandran’s earlier attempts at composing. Free download kannada songs and videos here.

NOORU JANMAKU - Kannada Movie Review

Kannada director Nagathihalli Chandrashekar is bound by personal beliefs not to make a film without adding a pet intellectual theme of his own. So, a love story gets mixed up with global recession (quite late in the day). The superficial smattering of job loss and financial crisis in a posh setting does not help the film anyway.

The protagonist is an architect, who reluctantly hires a female ‘right-hand.’ She turns out to be the backbone of his business as it prospers. The ‘work, work and more work’ philosophy means that at the end of the three-year-contract, our hero does not even know where she lives or her birthday. Perhaps her job application and contract letters were blank. When it is time for her to leave, he falls in love with her. She promptly introduces him to her fiancee and leaves.

Because of the recession and her absence, and more importantly due to the necessity of the story, his business begins to sink. He goes to Macau and finds himself competing against her in a contest that will make or break his career. As required in such a situation, the fiancee of the girl begins to show negative shades.

This kannada film is full of unwanted scenes. One prime example is where the two architects present a construction model to Karibasavaiah. Santosh’s character is made to act rhetorically in some scenes. The few good scenes present are not enough to make this a must-watch kanada film.

Santosh in the first lead role of his career would normally be considered the weakest link. But he manages to give a good performance and comes out as the best bet. On the music front, only the title song borrowed from Nagathihalli’s America America shows sings of becoming a hit. The background score tries to force the audience to laugh and fails. SIHIGAALI - Kannada Movie Review

There is a song in this Srimurali' kannada film, towards a woeful end, which Yesudas renders sorrowfully, questioning who wrote such a regretful story. It suits the state of this film aptly. There are so many holes in the film’s story and narrative that it resembles a fishing net. The director sure can’t write and in a numerologyinfluenced frenzy even messes up his name in the credits.

You sure know of a friend of a friend of a friend who left behind his mother in the village to earn money in the city. This is his story. To save enough money to build her a mansion, he does not buy a bike, sketches in the dark and does not cut his hair for years. And you also know that bad elements in the city would not let him live peacefully. To add some character to the film, Srimurali goes to visit his mom in the village. Mother Tulasi comes to visit him in the city. Srimurali and Shireen also meet to sing songs. Sharan sleeps under the cot and makes his assistant eat grease. Tired of narrating this nonsense the director kills Tulasi, Shireen and Srimurali in that order. His choice.

Leykkhan messes with the film and the producer’s money big time. If you don’t want to do the same with your time, keep a safe distance from Sihigaali. It is a gasbag and smells bad. Free download kannada film songs here.

SRI HARIKATHE - Movie Review

This week Srimurali's two kannada films released. What impact these two films will have on his carrier?

Sri Jarikathe is an unpretentious film whose only aim is to entertain by whatever means possible. Dayal tries every trick in the director’s book to make the proceedings interesting and succeeds in most scenes. That is not to say the film is just a spectrum of related scenes. But the story reminds you of what Dinesh Baboo did with Ananth Nag as a henpecked husband a long time ago (Hendtigelbedi).

A womaniser and his virgin-tillmarriage friend dispute on the issue all the time. The virgin friend’s test comes when his newly married wife asks him to abstain from sex till she completes her studies. While his wife flies out, he gets a girl home to satisfy his urges. As luck would have it, his wife returns home as her flight is cancelled. By morning he has to contend with a dead woman in his bedroom.

Though a scary background sound when the husband reaches out for his wife may not be the highest form of entertainment, puns, saucy dialogues and audacious twists keeps the narrative of Sri Harikathe engrossing. The first half of the film is a tad on the slower side. But when the real thing gets going it is a fun ride. A timepass film to the core.

Naveen Krishna as the womaniser delivers a brilliant performance. His presence takes his scenes to a higher level. The rest of the characters, though not impressive, pass the test. The visuals do not strain the eyes and the music does not hamper the ears. So a movie you can safely plan to spend some time on. Free download kannada film songs here.

Movie Review - Porki

DIRECTOR : M D Sridhar

When he wields the gun, he is Rambo. When he punches, he is Rocky. He talks like Mad Max and is invincible like an American comic superhero. That is Porki aka Datta aka Suryanarayan. Darshan is convincing as the all-destroying avatar of a tyrannosaurus in a china shop. Every scene is the same as that of the original (Telugu Pokiri), but what is missing is the feel that it is real. Porki feels more like a minefield where the characters are made to run around and get themselves killed.

Datta (Darshan) is a hit man who is ready to maim or kill anyone for a price. He has his principles though; no killing women and children. As the film progresses from one battle (with lots of lives lost) to another (with a higher number of lives lost) Datta emerges a bigger killer. Somehow our leading lady (Praneetha) seems to like this very character even though he does not have any of the five qualities she is searching for in her dream boy.

When you begin to wonder if Datta is destroying the underworld from inside, you realise that it was his motive in the first place. He is an undercover cop who is playing one rowdy element against the other to wipe them out. In the end, it is left to Ali Bhai (Ashish Vidyarthi) to mourn the losses of quality hence men in the underworld. The story is wafer-thin and the only possibility of the film being a good watch was to copy the emotions as they were in the original make. But even when Datta is watching the heroine expose her assets in an aerobic session, there is hardly any charge of hormones.

Music composer’s work is the best element in the film. Free download kannada film songs here. For some strange reason, the film at times looks like the 3D version of Avatar without the glasses. If you enjoy action films with lots of bullets. this is the film for you.

Movie Review - SURYAKANTHI (Kannada)

DIRECTOR: K M Chaitanya
ACTORS: Chetan, Regina, Nasser, Ganesh Yadav

There is a notion that art house kannada film directors cannot make masala flicks. But director K M Chaitanya proves the thought wrong. Suryakanthi has all the ingredients a commercial movie should have including action-packed scenes that Chaitanya’s earlier movie Aa Dinagalu did not have.

A case of mistaken identity forces Rohit (Chetan), an orphan brought up to be a contract killer by Stalin (Ganesh Yadav), to step into the shoes of Surya, a Harvard graduate who has come to India to take up job as a CEO in a company. Surya gets killed in place of Rohit by Stalin’s rival. Rohit a.k.a Surya not only ends up being the CEO but also gets engaged to the company owner’s daughter Kanthi, played by newcomer Regina. Kanthi, who is against the relationship, takes off to her grandfather Malanna Bahadur’s (Nasser) house in Belgaum where Rohit follows her. The rest of the film goes to show how true love transforms him into a good guy.

Nasser lights up the screen as Malanna Bahdur, a Gandhian in Belgaum who is stuck in the ’40s era. He gives a powerful performance with the right amount of emotions. Chetan’s acting gets better by the day and Regina too has done a decent job. Ganesh Yadav as Stalin is brilliant in his role. The music is just about okay. The cinematography is commendable. All in all, the direction by K M Chaitanya has worked wonders this time too. Free download kannada film songs here.

Kannada Film Review

MALE BARALI, MANJU IRALI

There is a long tradition of love triangles in Indian films. An addition to this list is Vijayalakshmi Singh’s new kannada film Male Barali, Manju Irali. Most of the film is a rip-off of the decade-and a-half-old Hindi film Yeh Dillagi. It doesn’t help that the Hindi film was also a copy of an old English movie. What is new is the story told from the perspective of the leading lady, Parvathy, who does a wonderful job.

Sneha (Parvathy) is a no-nonsense girl who has her goals firmly in sight; a career that will take care of her and her father. Her father (Jai Jagadish) works on a feudal estate and has kept his daughter away in Bangalore on the orders of the owners, who do not want her influence on the estate’s heirs. Vishwas (Srinagara Kitty) and Prem (Naga Kiran) are the rich heirs who are poles apart in character. Vishwas is an introvert trying to get over his failed affair. Unfortunately, Prem’s character is not suitably developed to be understood. Sneha falls in love with Vishwas without realising that Prem loves her.

Despite opposition from the boy’s mother and the introduction of a forgotten lover, there is no doubt throughout that Sneha will eventually end up in the arms of Vishwas. The brilliant performance of Parvathy is sometimes marred by her Suhasini-like accent. Considerable care has been taken by the director to present an authentic setting for the emotional scenes which is ably aided by good camerawork. But unnecessary songs and some boring scenes slow down the pace. Only Parvathy’s performance can bring in the crowds for this film.

Movie Review - EDDELU MANJUNATHA

This new kannada film narrative that keeps you hooked, dialogues that take you from one laughing bout to another, music that refuses to fade away and excellent performances by the lead actors, make Eddelu Manjunatha, as claimed by its makers, one of Jaggesh’s best kannada film ever.

The popular devotional song on the Lord of Dharmasthala has been used as the title of this interesting kannada film. No doubt, most people are wondering if this is the first devotional/mythological film of Jaggesh. But the presence of Jaggesh himself, the self-confessed lazy actor, confirms that Eddelu Manjunatha (Wake Up Manjunatha) is a comic take on work-shy sloths.

Manjunatha aka Manja has only obsession for drink. He manages to dodge all sorts of responsibility but still manages to lead a life he alone is content with. How he does it is narrated in a series of flashbacks while he spends time locked up in a hotel room with a blind film director. The contrast between the hardworking blind director and Manja himself is subtly revealed.

Manja’s narration of his life and the incidents that appear are hilarious. Meanwhile, Manja’s wife who is looking for him rescues him and the director from the hotel. But the duo get locked up again in Manja’s 10x12 ft home. Manja’s wife makes one last attempt to get him a job, but he is as disdainful of work as ever. The last few minutes in the movie, Manja realises he has led a worthless existence.

The film is held together by the hilarious dialogues penned by Guruprasad. A few of them may seem vulgar but Jaggesh somehow manages to mouth them in a way that seems perfectly normal. Even what seems funny has a tinge of sarcastic comment on society, life and Kannada films. Tabala Nani, as the blind director, looks real and gives a commendable performance. And so does Yagna Shetty who appears without makeup throughout.

Music by Anoop Seelin is of top quality. Free download kannada film songs here. But it is a pity that two of the songs are used as bits. Even in other places a little more money could have polished the visuals. The climax is a little preachy and the film is dialogue heavy. But like other good kannada films, Eddelu Manjunatha comes back to haunt long after you have seen it. JAGGESH ROCKS !!

CHAMKAISI CHINDI UDAYSI - Movie Review

Here is one more reason why dubbing should be allowed in Kannada. Chamkaisi Chindi Udyasi is a hotchpotch of various Hindi and English films garnished with stale jokes. To make matters worse there are very few scenes that evoke laughter in this film that was alleged to be a comedy by its makers. A R Babu who has made many low budget comedies, that nonetheless tickled the funny bone, makes a costly joke here but fails.

There is the age old plot of a villain gang searching for their lost booty of diamonds which is in the possession of the lead actress without her knowledge. A group of losers led by ‘Bottu’ Seena (Komal) try to win the girl while the real lover played by Kiran grubs and plods along. After a series of unrelated running-around-trees scenes in Malaysia, Kiran gets the girl, the villains die and Seena and gang get the diamonds.

Komal garners a lion’s share of the onscreen time and thereby the development of other characters is curtailed, many being without a beginning or an end. The film never rises above the ordinary and as it makes way towards the climax you have more or less lost interest in the proceedings. Two lessons learnt from this film; one if you remake a film, copy just one film. Second, better dub the original in Kannada. Of the many things you do not like in the film, is the saddening sight of an actor like Sudarshan cast in a role of a man infected by a rabid dog. Free download kannada film songs here.

Kabaddi - Movie Review

Three good things have happened to Kannada film industry with Kabaddi.
One is the arrival of a promising new director.
Second, a natural actor in Praveen has been found and
Third, a brilliant dialogue writer has been discovered in Hoo Pattanashetty.

Kabaddi is one of the best films to have hit the Kannada screen in the recent past. Surprisingly, for most of the cast and the director, it is their first film. It goes to prove that young blood does effect change. There is hardly anything in the film that feels jaded. From the visuals to the dialogues, there is a charm that creates movie magic. Long after watching it, the images, words and situations linger. After a long time (Navatare was the last) there is a film in Kannada that has sports as its theme. When that game is so native, the film too feels close to the heart.

The story is about the trials of a wannabe kabaddi player (Praveen as Praveena) and a coach (Kishore) who dedicates his life to building a winning team. In between there is power politics that determines who remains in the team and who does not. A love affair that faces hurdles because of the game runs through the plot. Praveena loses his chance to represent the country owing to an injury. But in the end he has to get back to the game to win the girl he loves. You know he will eventually win, but that does not dull your anticipation of what comes next. Director Narendra Babu (not the namesake who made Palakki and Yuvah) in his very first film has shown tremendous effort in narrating a plot with characters that are so believable.

The best part of the film are the dialogues. Hoo Pattanashetty (one more newcomer) tells it as it is. The two dialects of Mandya and north Karnataka are both impressive. When Praveen, Dharma and the others mouth them, they do not seem like actors but real people picked out of a crowd in a Mandya village. Though the camerawork is good, there is noticeable difference in some of the scenes and songs. Free download kannada film songs here. No doubt five cameramen were used for different parts of the film. Watch the film and feel it grow on you.

Kannada Movie Review: Dubai Babu: Torture Babu

For all the hype about Kannada actor Upendra’s 17 different getups and the fact it’s a remake of a successful film, Dubai Babu, is nothing more than a fancy dress parade by the lead actor and a torture to be borne by the audience. Upendra is loud, the alleged comedy boring and the film a colourful waste.

The kannada film is about Babu, a youth who is cheated of his money on the promise of being sent to Dubai for a job. He ends up in Mumbai along with five others fellow cheated souls running a roadside eatery. He falls in love with a girl and follows her back to Bangalore. But it is not just the girl he is after but also a gangster to exhaust his vengeance upon.

For a film with such a flimsy storyline it is necessary that every aspect is in perfect harmony. But sadly it does not. From the word go, Upendra goes into audio overdrive and drowns whatever he mouths with the noise. Veteran comedians Dwarakish, Tennis Krishna and Sadhu Kokila fail to evoke laughter. With the basic element of comedy falling flat there is nothing else others can do to salvage the film. Aryan Vaid is good except you do not understand the Kannada he speaks. From being unbelievable at first, the film turns out to be a farce by the end. There are a couple of good songs. Free download kannada film songs here. But these alone are not reason enough to visit a cinema hall. And be warned not to venture into Kapali cinema hall, the ‘main theatre’ for this film. The roof leaks.

Kannada Movie Review - Junglee

The camera work perhaps cannot get any better; Satya Hegde seems to be at his peak. The art work by Shashidar Adapa beats the best in the business. Kannada music director Harikrishna’s music is not great but good enough. Kannada actor Vijay dishes out another good performance. But it’s the film that is the problem. It has no story, too many dialogues for Rangayana Raghu and innumerable killings to keep count. In the least, the film promises a headache.

Prabhakar aka Junglee (Vijay) wants to be a screen villain. He comes to the city with his mentor Gudde Narashima (Rangayana Raghu) who has made good friends with the underworld. Half the film is tapori talk between these two characters. The censor board may be too decent to understand the vulgarity in this street talk. There is not much else in the film except for a couple of good songs and mass murders. But kannda hot actress andrita ray looks cute.

Suri, it seems, gathers all his information from watching films in bars. So, there are more than a dozen references to scenes from other films, and if not carrying a gun or sword, then the characters hold glasses or alcohol bottles. Free download kannada film songs here.

Happy Days are here again - Kannada movie review

JOLLY DAYS

Kannada Director MD Sridhar has managed to recreate the Telugu film Happy Days in Kannada. With this, his track record with remakes seems to be secure. The story of eight youngsters, trailing the four years they spend at engineering college, is entertaining and should be lapped up by collegians. Shridhar has remained so truthful to the original, in as much as casting newcomers who resemble the original cast line-up, that there is little chance of things going wrong. And Happy Days is not a very old film to swindle scenes from.

The storyline resembles kannada hit film Moggina Manasu which was about four girls and their college life. But this film is about four pairs and how they live through the experience of first love. There is nothing specially dramatic about the situations and it all feels like everyday happenings. This is the biggest plus point of the film. There are some not-so-believable parts like a genius student who invents ‘super power’ cricket bats and people’s images in the sky, but those are blended into situations to create good laughs.

The camera work by Krishna is a cut above the rest. The original tunes have been retained but none of them seems to be good enough to be a hit. The newcomers look and act their part to near perfection. Even if you are not a college student you can relive your student days watching Jolly Days. Free download kannada film songs here.

Kannada Movie Review - NANDA

Even though this is yet another addition to Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar’s long list of films themed on the underworld, Nanda deviates from the much recycled storyline quite a bit. Take out the overpowering backdrop of the underworld and this film is actually a family drama. The much publicised ‘real life-story’ of producer Maheen turns out to be quite entertaining.

Our hero (Shiva Rajkumar as Nanda) takes on a formidable family and helps his friend unite with his lover. As luck would have it, he falls in love with the sister of his friend’s girlfriend. Nanda saves an underworld element and is soon caught in the crossfire. The mysterious death of the leading lady’s father is attributed to Nanda and he is set to lose both lover and life. Since the story is from the hero’s viewpoint many of the dramatic elements get subdued between fights and songs. But there are enough twists in the tale that keep the momentum going.

The songs are not good enough and are thrust into the narrative like a rowdy would jab his sword into his victims. Free download kannada film songs here. Though there is an array of veteran actors, their characterisation is not much to write about. Despite these drawbacks this film would entertain Shiva’s fans no end.

CIRCUS - Kannada Movie Review

DIRECTOR: Dayal Padmanabhan

ACTORS: Golden star Ganesh, Archana Gupta, Avinash, Pawan, Yethiraj

The two most popular themes of commercial films in Kannada are love and the underworld. Kannada golden star Ganesh has never done anything beyond love and director Dayal Padmanabhan almost always has done films dealing with the seamy side of life. But together in Circus, they present a film quite unlike the usual. Ganesh has managed to break his ‘love mould’ and Dayal upgrades himself to an ‘A-grade’ director.

Dhanush (Ganesh) and his gang of friends are pranksters. Their mode of cleaning up the society is by writing anonymous letters to housewives about their cheating husbands and railway station masters about a fictious visits by the minister. But their luck gives way when unwittingly Dhanush’s name and address are mentioned in a threat they mail to a station master. They have little time to stop the letter from reaching its destination as they chase it while on a train journey. To their horror, they also find out that their prank is being imitated in real life by some terrorists. A love story is blended into this train journey. To Dayal’s credit the story never deviates and has a smooth flow.

To break the romance and underworld monopoly in Kannada films, it is not enough to make a decent film on any other subject. The film has to be more than good which Circus strives hard to be but just falls short. The excessive focus on Ganesh continues while other seasoned actors hardly get to mouth a sentence. The sketchy characters of the terrorists and the lack of momentum pulls down the film. Despite the drawbacks, Circus is worth a watch. Free download kannada film songs here.

Now its looks like its gonna be a huge hit at the box office. A splendid performances, neat narration, good music and hard work taking the film 'Psycho' towards the success.
