Ramya and Vijay in new Kannada film Jhonny Mera Naam

A two-acre set for kannada director Gubbi's new film Jhonny Mera Naam is fast turning a major tourist attraction in Mysore.

Even if we had charged a nominal Rs 10 a person, we would have collected no less than Rs 5 lakh by now,” says Mohan B Kere, the art director of kannada film Jhonny Mera Naam. The huge set he has put up for the film — starring Vijay and Ramya — in Mysore is drawing crowds and has become a major tourist attraction. Spread across two acres, it is said to be the largest outdoor set erected for a Kannada film till date — a record of sorts. On weekends, the cast and crew is finding it tough to control the crowds. (Donwload free MP3 songs here)

Built at a cost of Rs 70 lakh, the mammoth set houses a row of streets, a towering bridge, commercial establishments and a series of two-storied houses. Besides, two huge bungalows have been completely erected.

“After we discussed the story, I gave sketches and photoshop images to the director and cinematographer Krishna. There were some doubts whether the project would shape up well. Now, they are very happy as they are ahead of the schedule,” says Mohan. Ninety per cent of the film's shooting, he says, is taking place in these sets alone, including songs and fights. (Download free kannada MP3 songs / videos / lyrics here)

“Since all the ‘locations’ are in one place, shooting has progressed at a brisk pace. They can wrap up shooting by 4 pm every day,” says Mohan. The art director shot to fame with Hudugaru and has since been involved in all of Ganesh's films. Others big films include, Puneeth's Aam and Raj The Showman, Sudeep's Mussanje Maatu, Darshan's Porki and Josh.

Mohan's dream project is a 'floating village, which he was supposed to set up for Mahesh's film with Shiva Rajkumar. The film has been shelved, but Mohan is hopeful that he “will raise a similar set” for some other kannada film.

Inspired by the work, a corporator in Mysore decided to set up a similar studio. The Kala Degula studio has already started functioning from last week. (Download free kannada MP3 songs / videos / lyrics here)

Shooting of the Vijay, Ramya starrer kannada film Johny Mera Naam directed by kannada director Preetham Gubbi is progressing at a very fast pace in a special set erected in Mysore.

The set is in a 2 acre plot called Gandhi Colony. Vijay, Ramya, Rangayana Raghu and Sharan are participating in the shoot of the film which started in December.

Ramya is paired for the first time with Vijay. Ramya has been raving about the crew in her microblogging site. She says that she is having fun working in this unit and she has been in splits with both Rangayana Raghu and Sharan making the entire unit happy with their antics. (Download free kannada MP3 songs / videos / lyrics here)

Vijay has had a makeover and has reduced his weight by nearly seven kgs. "Director Preetham Gubbi wanted to see a new me along wiht a brand new hair do. I had full trust in his abilities to deliver a `pucca` entertainer through Johny Mera Naam. I have just followed what he told me. I am sure that Gubbi will achieve big success through this film as he did with his previous film", says Vijay.

Top 10 kannada films of 2010

Here is our choice of top 10 films from the Kannada film industry for the year 2010. The movies were chosen based on their box office ratings, the profit and the performances.

Aaptha Rakshaka

Director: P.Vasu
Producer: Krishna Prajwal
Cast: Dr. Vishnuvardhan, Vimala Raman, Sandhya, Bhavana, Avinash
Music: Guru Kiran.

Kannada film Aaptha Rakshaka directed by P.Vasu is a sequel to Aaptha Mithra starring Dr. Vishnuvardhan
and Soundarya. The film went on to become the biggest hit in the Kannada film industry. Dr. Vishnuvardhan died fifty days before its release.

Dr. Vishnu`s performance in the two different roles, Vasu`s interesting script and Guru Kiran`s
composition of `Chamundi Thaayi Aane` are the highest points of this Kannada film. (Download free songs,

Jackie

Director: Soori
Producer: Ms. Parvathamma Raj Kumar
Cast: Puneet Raj Kumar, Bhavana, Rangayana Raghu
Music: Hari Krishna.

This Kannada film was released on October 14 and within fifty days of the release the film was declared
a block buster hit. The combination of Power Star Puneet Raj Kumar and director Soori along with the
superb music composition of Hari Krishna and fantastic lyrics of Yogaraj Bhat helped in increasing the
box office appeal of the Kannada film.

The technical values of the film were at its peak thanks to the cameraman Sathya Hegde. Three songs of
the film `Ekka Raja Rani`, `Shiva Antha Hoguththidhe` and the title song became the biggest audio hit
two months before the film's release. Puneet's fights and dance sequences are the biggest attractions. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Super

Director: Upendra
Producer: Rockline Venkatesh
Cast: Upendra, Nayanthara
Music: Hari Krishna

The fact that kannada actor Upendra returned to direction after a gap of nearly ten years created a big
hype for this untitled film even before the release. The audio which was released two weeks before the
release also was an instant hit. Upendra's innovative direction, his dialogues and lyrics were much
appreciated by the fans.

The songs `Sikka Patte Ishta Patee` and `Kaayi Kaayi Uppina Kaayi` are big hits. The kannada film which
has been sold to all distribution areas for a good profit is also raking in huge revenues for the
distributors. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Krishnan Love Story

Director: Shashank
Producer: Uday Mehta
Cast: Ajay, Radhika Pandit
Music: Sreedhar Sambhram

Shashank`s Krishnan Love Story was a much expected kannada film. Fortunately for its producer Uday Mehta, Shashank did not disappoint anybody and the net result was that the film ran for one hundred days in a few centres of the state.

Ajay and Radhika Pandit delivered superb performances. The cinematography by Shekhar Chandra and music by Sreedhar Sambhram were much appreciated. The songs `Santheyalli Nintharoonu` and `Thumba
Aaramagidhdha` were ruling the charts for a long time. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Pancharangi

Director: Yogaraj Bhat
Producer: Yogaraj Bhat, Subramanya
Cast: Diganth, Nidhi Subbaiah.
Music: Mano Murthy

If one kannada film can become a big hit just because of the fantastic dialogues and the lyrics, then you can give the example of Pancharangi directed by Yogaraj Bhat. The lyrics for the `Lifeu Ishtene` and
`Pancharangi Haadugalu` were extremely popular, perhaps even more than Mano Murthy's music composition.

The dialogues written by Yogaraj Bhat was also much liked by the class audience. Diganth and Nidhi
Subbaiah gave good performances. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Eradaneya Maduve

Director : Dinesh Babu
Producer: Rajeev, Suresha
Cast: Anant Nag, Sudharani, Prem, Jennifer.
Music: Jayapal.

This kannada comedy film directed by Dinesh Baboo which was made on a shoe string budget was a surprise hit which even gave a big competition to big films. Anant Nag and Suhasini Maniratnam delivered strong performances, while the comedy by Sharan was enjoyed by the audience.

The film ran for fifty days and had a good run in many of the multiplexes. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Veera Parampare

Cast: Sudeep, Aindrita Ray, Ambareesh
Music: S.Narayan.

S.Narayan came back with a bang with Veera Parampare, an action oriented sentimental drama featuring
Rebel Star Ambareesh and Sudeep. Narayan's dilaogues made a good impact as much as Ambareesh and
Sudeep's fantastic performances. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Naanu Nanna Kanasu

Producer: Prakash Raj, B.Suresha
Director: Prakash Raj
Cast: Prakash Raj, Amoolya, Sithara
Music: Hamsalekha.

Naanu Nanna Kanasu is a remake of the Tamil film Abhiyum Naanum which was directed by Radhika Mohan. This was Prakash Raj`s debut as a director. The movie ran for 125 days. The strong collections for the film came in multiplexes, though it did not run too well in the interiors. Prakash Raj and Amoolya's

performance and Hamsalekha's music composition are the highlights of the film. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Porki

Director: M.D.Sridhar
Producer: Datta
Cast: Darshan, Praneetha
Music: Hari Krishna

Porki is the remake of the Telugu hit Pokkiri directed by Puri Jagannadh. The Kannada version had
Darshan in the lead role. Though the distributors made money, the producer claims that he had to sell
the film on deficit. Darshan's star appeal and Hari Krishna's music were the attractive elements of the
film. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)

Prithvi

Director: Jacob Varghese
Producer: M.D.Babu, Raj Kumar
Cast: Puneet Raj Kumar, Parvathy Menon
Music: Manikanth Khadri.

Prithvi starring Power Star Puneet Raj Kumar was sold for fancy rates to distributors which ensured huge
profits for the producer. Though a couple of them lost money, the film did get lot of appreciation from
class audience. The film's story revolved around an honest Deputy Commissioner who tries to control
illegal mining. Since the issue had political overtones the film was also the focus of many politicians
of the state. (Download free songs, Video, MP3 here)....

Updendra's Super kannada film is not remake

We can already imagine Uppi shaking his head in disgust and mouthing the line, “I don’t like it Kantha, I don’t like it” at the mention of this news. Because just when kannada Real Star Upendra’s Super team was celebrating the film’s unparalleled run at the BO, comes a dampener — that of plagiarism. While a little-known filmmaker accused Upendra of having plagiarised the script of Super on Wednesday, we learnt that wasn’t the only incident. Two other people also made claims that they were the original writers of Super — one even visited a local TV station to make this announcement, while the other went to the Directors’ Association.

When we spoke to kannada actor Upendra, he initially refused to comment on the issue, but then brushed off the allegations by saying, “Among the previous two who claimed the storyline was theirs, one was found to be mentally unsound, while the Directors’ Association said the other was doing it for his two minutes of fame,” added Uppi.

Then there’s the kannada filmmaker who claimed to have narrated a story similar to Super to Uppi a couple of years ago, but dropped project due to remuneration issues. “I meet 100 people every day. This guy could be one of them,” said an irritated Uppi, adding, “There are many newbies and wannabes who come to me expressing a desire to work with me. I don’t remember meeting this man, forget reading his script. And if he’s so confident that Super’s script is his, let him show me the proof,” said Uppi.

Apparently, the Real Star asked the so-called filmmaker the same question. And he said the opening scene of Super and the concept of India transforming into a superpower was his. But he neither has a copyright over the script, nor has he registered it. “Why do people wake up three weeks after a film’s release? That too, after it’s been declared a superhit? Super is an original story,” he said.

Kannada film KANASEMBO KUDUREYANNERI review

• DIRECTOR Girish Kasaravalli
• ACTORS Biradara, Umashree, Sadashiv Brahamavar, Pavithra Lokesh, Shivaranjan
• RUN TIME 90 mins
• CERTIFICATION U

At a time when fake Kasaravallis flood Kannada’s parallel cinema, the master returns to the arena, re-affirming our faith in art films. Having said that, Kanasembo Kudureyanneri is not the best of Kasaravalli’s works. As always, the film is simple in its content, but does not necessarily ignite you. (Like most of his works did).

Irya is a gravedigger and lives in pitiable condition with his wife Rudri. His belief in his profession prevents him from taking any other labour. But it is not every day that someone dies in the village. His wife takes up the responsibility of earning the daily morsel. Irya dreams of Siddha, his community God, promising him ‘work’ the following day. He believes the village landlord has passed away. But his belief is shattered when he is told there has been no death. His wife’s dream of Siddha's arrival also proves to be false. But the reality turns out to be something different. Irya's dreams are crushed from becoming realities by the manner in which the well-off people in the village use it to re-establish and save their own belief systems.

The non-linear narrative, a first in Kasaravalli films, was not completely essential. Only in two scenes does it have some impact. The technique is not used to reveal different perspectives of the same situation by different people, but only to show some additional information, not visible to the other. The climax seems like an afterthought that does not exactly connect with the original storyline.

Brilliant in Irya’s role, kannada acotr Biradara proves his talent after being marginalised in commercial cinema as a comedian. As convincing is Umashree as Rudri. Veteran actor Sadashiv Brahamavar should pick up an award or two for his role in the film.

Kasaravalli's attention to detail, in all departments, is the reason for the good show by every actor and technician in the film. V Manohar's music is rustic and charming and ‘more’ than what you find in regular art films. HM Ramachandra's cinematography is another major highlight. Kanasembo Kudureyanneri is a good film for serious film aficionados; but it does not ignite you. Not quite a master’s work, shall we add. Yet, it has glimpses of his brilliance.

New Kannada fim Lifeu Ishtena?

Kannada director Yograj Bhat is lending his name and banner toLifeu Ishtena?, a bilingual, which will be directed by his assistant Pawan.

Yograj Bhat's assistant and cowriter Pawan Kumar is turning director. But unlike his mentor, the young man is looking to establish his name across the border. The film Lifeu Ishtena? will be made in both Kannada and Tamil.

When we queried the mentor about his contribution to his prodigy's film, he said, “I am providing both moral and immoral support to the project.” Hmmm...whatever that means! Lifeu Ishtena? is produced by Manjunath (Jack Manju) while Yograj productions will be associated with it. “It is no longer feasible to make profits out of Kannada films alone. We have to look beyond it. Yograj Bhat is an easily recognisable name outside the state too,” said Manju.

He was hoping that Yograj fans outside Karnataka would appreciate their “bilingual efforts”.
“Moreover, fresh faces are easily accepted in Tamil. We are hoping to make a dedicated effort in the bilingual. Fresh faces are a bonus in Tamil," he added.

Diganth will play the lead in the film. Talking about the film, Bhat says,”“The script by Pawan is wonderful. It required a wider canvas. The film is a big-budget film and my banner will be a part of the project. I will be writing only a couple of songs.”

The title in Tamil is yet to be finalised as English words cannot be used in Tamil Nadu.

Kannada film Mylari release got delayed

Kannada film actor Shiva Rajkumar’s 99th film Mylari deferred after it fails to reach the Censor Board.

Shiva Rajkumar's 99th kannada film Mylari will not release this Friday as planned earlier. The R Chandru-directed flock had a frantic shooting schedule and post-production to meet the date, but it proved too late. At the last minute, the Censor Board officials did not watch the film on Monday. The kannada movie was finally censored on Wednesday and got a U/A certificate. Free download kannada film Mylari sogs here.

Undeterred, the film's producer, KP Srikanth, says the film will get one more week for publicity. (Free kannada film Mylari pictures)

Meanwhile, Mylari has lived up to its hype, being one of the selected kannada films this year that was sold outright to distributors in all territories. Sources said the producer had already made profits. Of late, distributors are picking up films for distribution only on commission basis. Shiva Rajkumar, at 99, is still rocking. (Free download kannada MP3 here)

Kannada film Director Chandru is thrilled as well. “Rajkumar said he was very happy with the new look I had given in the film and the fact that the film has garnered such hype,” he said. Besides, Chandru has signed the actor for his next two projects.

Karnataka State Film Awards - 2008-09

Like in the past, this year too, the state kannada cinema awards weren’t free from controversies. At a press conference to announce the awards here on Friday, a few journalists objected to the selection of K S R Das for the Puttanna Kanagal Award. They argued that Das had done many remake films and films depicting violence and hence didn’t deserve to win the award named after the great kannada direcotr Puttanna Kanagal, who is known for his originality.

Awards committee selection chairman veteran director Bhargava said that they had considered four persons — Das, Girish Karnad, D Rajendra Babu and P H Vishwanath — for the award and had selected Das. Referring to Karnad, he said: “Karnad is the recipient of awards like Jnanpith and Padma Bhushan. So, we thought this award was small,’’ Bhargava said. When the media took exception to this and said it was an insult to the director, Kannada and culture secretary Ramesh Zalki and information director Muddu Mohan intervened and requested the journalists not to make a controversy. The trio discussed amongst themselves and then announced that they were giving it to Karnad.

Das (74) is known in Kannada and Telugu film industries. Some of his movies in Kannada are Kaidi, Tirugubaana, Sahodarara Savaal, Nanna Prathigne, Bangarada Gudi and Ondagi Baalu.

Sudeep (Mussanje Maathu) and Ajay Rao (Taj Mahal) were in the race for the best actor’s award, while Ramya (Mussanje Maathu) and Supritha (Ambari) were in the race for the best actress award. Asked whether Ramya was not considered for the award as she did not dub her voice, Bhargava said: “That was not the issue at all. If it was so, why would the government institute a separate award for voice dubbing?’’

In the beginning, it was about two members — Banandur Kempaiah, an employee of DD and director D Rajendra Babu — dropping off from the 9-member panel. “We watched the movies for 8-9 hours a day. Being an employee of DD, he said he couldn’t spare that much time. The government should have given it a thought before nominating him,’’ Bhargava said.

Wedding bells for kannada director Suri

He will marry his long-time sweetheart Pallavi, a painter.

Ace kannada director Suri is set to marry his long-time girlfriend Pallavi. Hailing from Davangere, Pallavi is an accomplished painter while Suri started as a painter and turned to artdirection, dialogue writing and then directing. Known each other for nearly five years, the two will tie the knot in at Kollur’s Mookambika temple near Mangalore on December 8.

“Only members of both the families will be present. Later, we will have a reception in Bangalore,” said Suri.

“I knew the girl and the families have approved, so it can be called love-cum-arranged marriage. It will be a simple function in the temple. True, it is about 450 km from Bangalore and that is the reason we will have a reception later,” Suri said. Sources said Mookambika shrine was Suri's mother’s choice. The wedding was advanced as the month of Ashada is to set in soon. “Otherwise the marriage would have happened held only next year,” Suri said.

Suri is basking in the success of his latest film Jackie, which has become the highest-grossing Kannada film during its 50-day run at the box office.

Super Kannada movie review

• DIRECTOR Upendra
• ACTORS Upendra, Nayanatara (average looking), Sadhu Kokila, Sudarshan, Tulip Joshi
• RUN TIME 135 mins (good!!)

Does the audience expect kannada actor Upendra, who has returned to direct a kannada film after 10 years, to do the same old routine? He carries the unenviable burden of having to create something unique everytime he comes up with a film. Maybe, that is why he stayed away for so many years. The actordirector-story-writer picks up his pet theme of 'cleaning up India,' an idea he propagated in his old film Operation Antha, where he appears like a messiah, with his preachy monologues. (Free download super songs here)

The film begins in 2030. Our Vidhana Soudha stands shining amidst Manhattan-type skyscrapers and Mysore brims with an international airport. Spotless roads are cleaned by white-skinned foreigners, who also take up all menial jobs. A rupee is worth 80 British pounds and India looks like a high-school boy's Utopian dream. This is the best part of the film, an unbelievable fantasy worth enjoying (at least) on the screen. Back in 2010, one man changed the country forever. (You must have guessed? Who else?)

Subash Chandra Gandhi (Upendra) is an Indian-origin businessman in London who can distinguish between the soil of India and England by just smell itself. A gift of packed soil from India is enough to seal any business deal with him. He marries an authentic Indian woman Indira (Nayantara) and after her betrayal begins to change the country to win her back.

Such fantasy journeys have been a forte of directors like Shankar (Shivaji - The Boss, Enthiran). Besides the obvious inspiration, Upendra borrows heavily from his own Operation Antha. But, many copied Upendra in the last 10 years and managed to outdo him. Super turns out to be an amalgamated story, having picturised the same-old sequences in his previous flicks. Dialogues have always been his strength, but here many seem coerced. Some of them do entertain, enticing applause occasionally.
The songs too pale in comparison to his earlier films.

Super is replete with references to many current political events in the state. Like Gandhi becomes the chief minister with the help of mining barons Chaddi Brothers, who 'resort' to horse trading.

By the way, Subash Gandhi's knowledge of English must have been through Kannada films. There is the 'by-the-by' phrase, unique to Kannada films, uttered twice. Barring a few episodes, the film does not stand up. An average film overall.
